A number of new initiatives have been undertaken by the Regional Centre, Cochin such as need based programmes, short term training programmes, collaboration with institutions etc. These have been detailed below:
Post Graduate in Plantation Management (PGDPM)
The Post Graduate Diploma in Plantation management (PGDPM) is developed by IGNOU Regional Centre Cochin, jointly with the School of Agriculture; under the scheme of region specific need based programmes. It is the first of its kind to be offered in the country through the Open and Distance learning mode. The PG Diploma is aimed at developing competent professionals in Plantation Industry, to impart knowledge and skills in production, processing, marketing and finance management in plantation sector and to upgrade the technical proficiency of professionals working in the Plantation Industry. The programme is on offer from January 2009 session. The Regional Centre is closely monitoring the programme. The first batch will complete the programme by December 2009.

Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Research in Management (PGDTRM)
IGNOU Regional Centre Cochin has developed Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Research (PGDTRM) under the chairmanship of Prof. M.V. Pylee, National Professor. The programme has been visualised in the context of the acute shortage of competent management teachers in India and the resulting need to attract fresh talents as well as to provide capacity building of management teachers. Thus, the main objectives of this programme is to sharpen the teaching, research and consultancy skills to enable the participants to pursue a career in the field of teaching, research and consultancy, impart necessary skills and training in preparation of project reports and to undertake consultancy work as well as to create a research orientation in management teachers and prepare them for undertaking independent research projects, consultancy and training. The Programme was launched on 21st March, 2009.
The first meeting of the Programme Monitoring Committee of IGNOU-KMA collaboration in respect of Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Research in Management (PGDTRM) programme was organised on Saturday, 12th September, 2009 at 10 am at Kerala Management Association, Cochin under the Chairmanship of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor.
The first batch of students of PGDTRM started in July 2009 and the first semester is almost over. A case workshop is being arranged during 21-22 November 2009 at KMA for the students to give them exposure to dealing with management cases. Study materials to be distributed to students for the second semester commencing from January 2010 are being finalized and is expected to be completed soon. This programme is run in collaboration of Kerala Management Association. There is an intake of 50 students in the first batch for this programme. The programme fee is Rs.15,000/-. Diploma in DIPLOMA IN FISH PRODUCTS TECHNOLOGY (DFPT)
The school of Agriculture is in the process of developing a Diploma programme in Value Added Fish Products with the financial support from Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India. This programme is of 32 credits and is of one year duration. The programme consists of 7 courses having theory as well as practical components. The eligibility of this course is senior secondary pass outs and BPP (under IGNOU/OLS Mode). The main objective of the programme is to develop and strengthen human resource by infusing and imparting knowledge and skills in value added fish products as well as in post harvest management of fish. IGNOU has already advertised admission notice for this programme last week. All theory as well as practical write-ups have been obtained from writers and most of the editing work is over. The matter related to four courses is in the final proof reading stage. The printing of the course material will be over within three months. The brochure has already been designed and available in the website. The identification of study centers is in progress. Script preparation for audio and video presentations will be initiated very soon. The programme is planned to be launched very soon.
POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION (PGDP.Ed)
IGNOU Regional Centre Cochin has designed Post Graduate Diploma in Pre-primary Education (PGDPEd.) with the objective of developing a specialized cadre of pre-school teachers who have received advanced training in scientific methodologies and practices for pre-school education. A course writers meeting for Post Graduate Diploma in Pre-primary Education (PGDP.Ed) was held on 11th May, 2009 at 10 am at IGNOU Regional Centre, Cochin for identifying the resource persons for the preparation study materials.
An expert Committee Meeting for PGDP.Ed was held on Saturday 8th August, 2009 at 11.00 am, under the Chairmanship of Prof. A Sukumaran Nair, Former Vice Chancellor, MG University in the presence of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, IGNOU. It is proposed to launch the programme in January 2010.

IGNOU-CIAL COLLABORATION

IGNOU-IIMSHE COLLABORATION
Launching of PG Diploma and Diploma in Management in Industrial Safety, Health and Environment in collaboration with IIMSHE, Bhopal
The PG Diploma and Diploma in Management in Industrial Safety, Health and Environment in collaboration with the Institute of Industrial Management for Safety, Health and Environment (IIMSHE), Bhopal was launched in Cochin region on 07.01.2009 by Sh. P.K. Gurudasan, Hon’ble Minister for Labour, Training and Employment in the presence of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU. The function was organized at FACT, Udyogmandal in which industrialists, engineers, senior officers of FACT and other neighbouring industries and prospective students participated. Admissions are now going on for the programme for this session.
The Government of Kerala has issued orders recognizing these diploma programmes as Qualification for safety supervisors and safety officers.

IGNOU-RECT COLLABORATION
MoU with Rajagiri Educational and Charitable Trust (RECT)
The main objectives of the collaboration between IGNOU and RECT are:
To enhance knowledge, skills, attitude and awareness among the students in the field of various areas in Science and Technology.
To undertake joint research activities in the areas of Science, Technology and Management to enrich the faculty with recent developments and also to enhance the syllabus and curriculum of joint educational programme.
Under this MOU full time face to face academic programmes of M.Tech in Embedded Systems Design and Information Security have already been started.
13 students were enrolled in M.Tech ISS and 18 students were enrolled in M.Tech ESD through this IGNOU- RECT collaboration. We have received an amount of Rs.5,39,440/- towards share money for this programme and the same has been transferred to headquarters.

COLLABORATION WITH KERALA IT MISSION
MoU with Kerala State IT Mission
IGNOU has signed an MoU with Kerala State IT Mission to offer IGNOU programmes through the Akshaya e-Kendras located in around 3000 Centres in the State. It is envisaged that with the State wide network of Akshaya, particularly in the rural and remote areas, we will be able to use their infrastructural facilities for the spread of education and dissemination of knowledge in different fields as per the teaching and learning procedures of IGNOU for the benefit of persons located in these areas.

A meeting of Akshaya District Coordinators was held at IGNOU Regional Centre, Cochin on 6th October, 2009 at 10.30 am. In this meeting the modalities of operationalising the MOU was discussed. In addition, guidelines were also given to the District Coordinators about how to organize counseling sessions and how to monitor academic activities. Doubts regarding implementation of the MOU were also clarified.
A meeting of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) was held on 19 October, 2009 at the Office of the Kerala State IT Mission, ICT Campus, Vellayambalam, Trivandrum under the Chairmanship of the Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, IGNOU.
