Kochi Regional Centre

The Regional Centre, Kochi was established on 17th November, 1988 with its jurisdiction over the entire state of Kerala. Now, the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, districts of Thiruvanthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta are coming under Thiruvanthapuram Regional Centre

Kerala is a small state tucked away in the south-west corner of India with North latitude between 8o 18' and 12o 48' and East Longitude between 74o 52' and 77o 22'. It is geographically 38,863 sq. kms. area, accounting for about 1.18 percent of the total area of India. The literacy rate recorded is 91 % and is the highest compared to the averages of other state in the country. There are quite a good number of educational institutions offering higher education courses through conventional universities and distance education institutions.

The Regional Centre, Kochi was initially located in the campus of Cochin University of Science and Technology at the instance of the Govt. of Kerala. Over the years, the number of Study Centres in the region, the student enrolment into different programmes and the staff strength in the Regional Centre increased substantially and the space provided was felt inadequate for the activities of the Regional Centre. The state government agreed to reimburse the hire charges for the accommodation of the Regional Centre and accordingly the centre was shifted to a hired building located in Mamangalam near Palarivattom. Later, the state government allotted one acre of land on lease, at Kaloor, and the University constructed its own building on the land. The Regional Centre shifted to its new permanent premises during the year 2002. The Regional Centre building was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of IGNOU on 15th December, 2003 . The Regional Centre accommodates all sections; Library, Regional Computer Lab, Conference Hall, FM Gyan Vani Studio and two Guest rooms.
